Clinic vs Lesson

What Is the Difference Between a Golf Clinic and a Private Lesson?

Quick answer

A golf clinic is a one-hour group session on a fixed topic, while a private lesson is one-on-one instruction built around your swing. At Golf Center of Arlington, clinics cost $30 for members or $37 for non-members with clubs and balls provided; private lessons are performance-based, booked by appointment, and end when you're ready.

What happens in a golf clinic?

A clinic at Golf Center of Arlington is a scheduled one-hour class with a fixed focus. You show up, get a club if you need one, and work through the session's topic alongside a handful of other golfers. Clinics run separately for men and women and concentrate on the four things beginners need most: driving, short game, putting and consistency. The instructor demonstrates, you try it, and the instructor walks the line correcting each person in turn.

The Women's Golf Clinic, led by Robert Galan, follows a fuller arc across sessions: grip and setup, irons and driver, pitching and short game, chipping and putting, a virtual round on Toptracer, and confidence on the course. It is beginner-friendly, and returning golfers who have been away from the game are welcome. Both clinics are pay-as-you-go with no long-term commitment; you can take one, skip a month, and come back. Current dates are on the Golf Clinic page.

What happens in a private lesson?

A private lesson is one-on-one time with Robert Galan, who has decades of golf experience and teaches juniors, adults and the Women's Golf Clinic. The content is not a fixed topic; it is whatever your swing needs that day, inside the structure of the Golf Integrated Skills Program.

That program has two tracks. The Development Program for beginners runs through four levels: Level 1 short game, grip, stance, posture, aim, ball position and basic etiquette; Level 2 half swing with punch and half pitch shots; Level 3 full swing with irons, woods, sand and flop shots; Level 4 course management, rules, scoring and a full round with a logged score. The Refinement Program for advanced players adds full swing mechanics on TrackMan, mental preparation, fitness, nutrition, tournament preparation and season-long goal programs such as breaking 90.

The defining difference

A clinic ends at 60 minutes. A private lesson at Golf Center of Arlington ends when you can repeat the skill. The program is built from the putting green back to the tee box so you own your swing and can get yourself back on track on the course without a coach standing beside you.

Who should choose a clinic, and who should choose a private lesson?

A clinic is the better fit if you…

  • Have never had instruction and want to try it for $37
  • Don't own clubs yet; everything is provided
  • Learn well by watching others get corrected
  • Want a social, low-pressure hour with people at your level
  • Prefer a fixed schedule and a fixed price
  • Are a woman who wants a women-only setting

A private lesson is the better fit if you…

  • Want every minute focused on your own swing
  • Are working through Development Program Levels 1–4
  • Have a specific fault, such as a slice or thin chips
  • Would rather finish a skill than finish an hour
  • Need flexible appointment times
  • Are an experienced player entering the Refinement Program

If you are still not sure, the tie-breaker is simple: take one clinic first. It costs $37, provides the clubs, and by the end you will know whether you want more time in a group or one-on-one. Our hub, Golf for Complete Beginners in Arlington, TX, lays out where each format sits in the full beginner path.

How do the costs compare over a season?

A clinic is the cheaper single session, at $37 for non-members and $30 for members, and it includes clubs and balls, so a beginner's first hour of instruction can cost nothing beyond the clinic fee. Membership at $18/month or $129/year pays for itself quickly if you take clinics regularly, since each one saves $7 and every medium bucket drops from $21 to $15.

Private lesson pricing is not something we will quote on this page, because it depends on what you book; the current rate appears when you select a time through Square appointments. What we can say is that private lessons at Golf Center of Arlington are performance-based, so you are paying for a skill rather than a block of time, and golf balls are included. Practice between sessions is inexpensive: the free short game area comes with any bucket, and regular bucket prices are 30% off between 9 AM and 6 PM daily.

Which format do kids use?

Junior golf at Golf Center of Arlington works a little differently. Juniors ages 5 through 17 are grouped by age and ability and taught through private lessons by appointment, with equipment available if a child does not have clubs. For friends, siblings, birthday parties, homeschool groups, church groups and scouts, a private group lesson gives kids the clinic-style social hour with instruction tailored to the group. Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes and can include warm-up, grip and posture, full swing, chipping, putting, games and skill challenges. Parents who want to learn alongside their kids often take the adult clinic while the junior lesson runs, since both happen on the same range.

Can you combine clinics and private lessons?

Yes, and it is the path we see work most often. A typical adult beginner at Golf Center of Arlington takes a clinic or two to learn the vocabulary and get comfortable on the range, then books private lessons to move through the Development Program at their own pace, and keeps dropping into clinics for the social hour and a fresh look at putting or driving. Our guide on how adult beginners find a good golf instructor explains what to ask before booking, and the Golf Lessons page covers the full instruction menu, including TrackMan sessions and the Refinement Program.

Whichever you pick, both happen on the same grounds: 18 covered, heated Toptracer bays, 28 grass hitting areas, 12 target greens and a free short game area, open Monday–Saturday 8 AM–11 PM and Sunday 8 AM–10 PM. Golf Center of Arlington has been family-owned since 1986 and is open to the public with no membership required.

Frequently asked questions

Is a golf clinic cheaper than a private lesson?

Per session, yes. A one-hour group clinic at Golf Center of Arlington costs $37 for non-members or $30 for members, and clubs and balls are provided. Private lessons are one-on-one and performance-based, and the current price is shown when you book through Square appointments. Many beginners start with a clinic to try instruction at the lowest cost, then add private lessons.

How many people are in a golf clinic?

Clinics at Golf Center of Arlington are small group sessions led by one instructor, run separately for men and women, and last one hour. The exact number varies with sign-ups, but the format is designed so the instructor can walk the line and correct each golfer individually. They are booked through Square classes and are pay-as-you-go with no long-term commitment.

Do I need my own clubs for a clinic or a private lesson?

Not for a clinic: all clubs and balls are provided, though you are welcome to bring your own. For a private lesson, golf balls are included; bring your own clubs if you have them or ask about options when you arrive at Golf Center of Arlington. Nobody will ask you to buy equipment before you have decided you enjoy the game.

Can a complete beginner take a private lesson right away?

Yes. The Development Program at Golf Center of Arlington is designed for people who have never played, and Level 1 starts with grip, stance, posture, putting and chipping, plus basic rules and etiquette. Some beginners prefer to take a $37 clinic first to get comfortable, but there is no requirement to do so before booking a private lesson with Robert Galan.

Are there separate clinics for women?

Yes. Golf Center of Arlington runs men's and women's clinics separately. The Women's Golf Clinic, led by Robert Galan, covers grip and setup, irons and driver, pitching, chipping, putting, a virtual round on Toptracer and confidence on the course. It is beginner-friendly, welcomes returning golfers, costs $37 ($30 for members), provides clubs and balls, and is booked through Square classes.
